So there's a bike sale for last year's models I could save 0 bucks of off a 0 mountain bike. My wife said it's too expensive still and that I shouldn't buy it and look for a used one on craigslist for way less money. I really like this one and i'm saving a good chunk of change. What would you do?

Me ans my friend are having this debate.
I say horse riding because I know of so many horses and riders to die on Cross Country courses.
But he says mountain biking is even though he doesn't know of anybody dieing on courses.

I'm looking to spend no more than £300 on a man's mountain bike and I'm totally confused by the many brands on offer, I know he wants disc brakes but other than that I'm at a loss of what 'name' to go for. Who makes the best mountain bikes please?

I'm not entering competitions so don't say I need to spend a lot more. I would mainly use it for work and some off road biking. I don't want a hybrid as the off roading i'll be doing would be to hard for one to handle.

It has been at least 15 years since I sat on a bike, and I am very out of shape. I would like to ride on the street, but would also like to enjoy the great Mountain Biking trails that AZ has to over. I am not looking to spend more than 0.00. I am 5' 11". What kind of bike would you recommend? What size bike would you recommend. Is there anything else I should know? I am quite clueless.
I like to bike on Bike paths and on Side streets for fitness. Maybe 50-70 miles a week. I weigh 210, So I figure mountain bikes would be more durable. I usually buy Mountain bikes for 0 or so from places like Walmart or K-mart. That being said I am looking for a better Quality bike, Somewhere between 200-350. I am most concerned about safety and durability....Should I buy a High quality Used bike from E-bay,,,,I high end Model from a Walmart,,,Or should I go to a Bike shop and buy a Entry level Bike???...I wen't to Bert's bikes in Tonawanda NY and they recomended a Trek-820 for 329.99 with free lifetime service.. I will be moving to Bristol (UK) and I understand it's quite hilly so I want a mountain bike and since I won't have a car, I will use it to transport things around and don't want to just use a backpack. But I never see baskets on mountain bikes, panniers occasionally. I only see baskets on non-mountain bikes. When I was in Holland, I didn't see baskets on mountain bikes (though Holland barely has any hills so mountain bikes aren't necessary). Is it dangerous to put a basket on a mountain bike? Like it interferes with the gears or something? Thanks
I know my question "outs" me as a newbie, but I never understood why mountain bikers ride slower than those on 10-speeds in races. Also, I race on a 10-speed, but I ride as slow as the mountain bikers. I'm in great shape but I can't understand why I lag behind the group in races. I'm sure it has something to do with the gear shifts, but I never learned how those worked. Can someone help out this first-timer?

it's an '03 Santa Cruz Bullit with a Marzocchi 66 light front fork and I love it but I've never been good at wheelies/manuals, as soon as I get to the right balance point I panic and hit the rear brake. I was wondering if anyone out there had any tips.
I've had good luck with Diamondbacks in the past but I was wondering what bike would you recommend? I am a bigger guy, so I probably need a 26 inch wheel. Suspension is nice
