As a bike enthusiast I can say that one of the most loveable bikes in the world, besides mountain bikes, are the city or cruiser bikes. It is part of a retro trend that floods the world and especially those who see themselves as environmental friendly folks. Electra bikes is one of the most elegant and popular brands in the market. So what makes it so special?
Besides a good marketing and good public relationships, Electra Bicycle Company has great designs and technology combined with a social ideology that makes a profound linkage between the past, the present and the future.

Electra Bikes History

The company was founded in California at 1993 by Benno Bänziger and Jeano Erforth, both imegrated to USA in 1990. Bänziger had originally planned to start manufacturing snowboards or skateboards, but turned his attention to bicycles after he realized that those markets were crowded with competitors.

As Bänziger told the San Diego Union-Tribune, “The one thing I found when I looked at cycling in the US was that everything was some kind of sport, but very few people used bikes for fun or for transportation. I wanted to introduce the ‘having a bike in your life’ factor, as opposed to ‘being a cyclist.”

In those days, the early 1990's, it was very defecult to find a nice quality and new cruiser bikes. About this time, Bänziger met Erforth and the tow decided there was a market niche for a stylish, affordable cruiser bicycle for twentysomethings and began working on designs that combined old school looks with contemporary technology.
At the begining it was heard to sell but people in the U.S started to realize they didn't need a mountain bike to go to the grocery store. So, they began to sell, and word-of-mouth convinced more dealers to sign on and today, Electra bikes are available in bike shops throughout Europe, the USA, Japan and Australia.

Electra Bikes 2000

In 2002, the company diversified its products, introducing the new “Stream Ride” series. These new cruiser bikes were inspired by the Southern California hot rod “kustom kar” culture. In a more explicit tribute to the car culture, Electra brought out a “Rat Fink ” model, licensed by the estate of legendary hot-rodder “Big Daddy” Ed Roth. As Erforth told the Tacoma News-Tribune “We have spent a lot of time at hot rod hangouts during our time in California, We made a connection with the people who have the licensing for the Rat Fink (logo and name). We wanted to make something that would be appreciated by that community.”

In 2003, the company had another great idea and came out with a major new design: the Townie. This bike’s innovation was what the company calls “Flat Foot Technology,” now more widely known as the crank forward design. The design allows the rider a more comfortable expirience because when sitting on the saddle, his or her feet can still stand flat on the ground, which feels safer for some riders. After its succes other bike companies have introduced bikes with a similar crank forward design. These bikes include Day 6 Comfort Bicycles, the Giant Suede, the Trek Pure, the K2 Big Easy, the Sun Bicycles Ruskin and Rover, and the Rans Fusion. The Raleigh Gruv and the Cannondale Day Tripper were introduced after the Electra Townie, but as of 2009 are no longer in production.

Over the past few years, Electra has a continues succes and made some smart moves to reach out to more people who would not normally ride. One of this moves was when they partnered with fashion design firm Petro Zillia to produce a high-end fashion bike with eye-popping colors. Not only has the bike been featured widely, when Petro Zillia’s chief designer, Nony Tochterman, rode an Electra up the runway at a major fashion show, he made the fasion impact widespread even more in the fashion press.

Used mountain bikes

Today in the current financial situation you can find awesome deals on used mountain bikes and especially here at mountain bikes review, its unbelievable what kind of bikes can you buy and for such a ridicules price. I guess its because some people truly need money and that’s why they are selling their almost brand new, well equipped mountain bikes and that’s your chance to get yourself one of those.

Some of the things you need to pay attention to and ask yourself or the seller when buying used mountain bikes are how often did the previous owner ride the bikes and where and whether they were the only rider or did many people rode it. You can also ask if the bikes were maintained properly and in what frequency.

When you take a look on the mountain bikes make sure you are checking if the chain rings and sprocket teeth sharp or rounded – if they are still rounded you got yourself a great deal. Sharp teeth usually mean that these bikes are worn out but you can mention it to the seller and sometimes you’ll get such a great price that it will be cheaper to buy new ones and replace the old. Another important thing to look at is are the wheels straight or not, again if you pay attention to it you will get a discount that will help you buy new wheels. Also be sure to ask about the gears and how quick can you change them or is it hard to change the gears and do they slip when you press the pedals too hard? The last thing I usually look for is cracks in the frame at the bottom or next to the head tube area – these parts take most of the action and they must be able to hold it.

Because of all these questions my favorite place to shop for used mountain bikes is eBay, with eBay I know that they are looking out for me and I can just put my energy in finding the right bikes for the best price.

Used street bikes for sale

Used street bikes is a raising trend and thats why we decided to write about it at mountain bikes review. The current economical situation brings more and more people to look for used street bikes for sale because of two main reasons: The first one is that its cheaper, healthier and much cooler to drive on bikes instead of cars. Now with all those small bike parking lots that lets you park your bikes, change clothes and take a shower before you go to your office its even more easy and convenient to drive your bikes to work. The second reason is that you don’t need to invest so much money in new street bikes when you can get the same bikes in a very good condition for much much less. Many people today need money and so they sell their used street bikes even if the bikes are in a very good condition.

So what do you need to pay attention to when you buy used bikes: you must check the frame which is the most important part of the bikes – does it look ok? Is it broken in different places? Is the paint new or old? That will give you an indication if the previous owner took good care of his bikes or not. If he did then the used street bikes can be even in a better condition than the old ones since that owner probably repaired damages that were created by the manufacture. Some owners even add cool and great gadgets to their bikes with the years and you can enjoy all of these advantages.

You must also make sure that you can trust the seller, you can ask a few questions about the bikes to see if they are right for you or not. I personally prefer to shop for used street bikes at eBay, that how I know that I am completely covered and have nothing to worry about besides finding the right bikes for the best price.

I'm 6'2" with a 35" inseam. I'm planning on going mtn biking/touring with it. I was thinking of taking it with a BOB trailer and going bicycle camping (like the Continental Divide Trail) at some point... but mostly plan to just do routine mtn biking. In other words, I don't need a super-great competition bike. I need one for comfort (for long-distance rides) but also able to ride and keep up on regular mtn bike rides.

What would the best mtn bikes for me be?
