  1. There is no such thing as a reliable MTB. These bikes get the crap beaten out of them if you do singletrak. If reliability is a concern look for Shimano XT components. LX is good as well. Components that are just Deore or lower, like Alivio, will break if you do singletrak. Bikes that have XT or LX components are much more expensive than others, probably like 1500 or so. The Gary Fisher Big Sur is a good buy for a hardtail. If you want dual suspension, you’ll need to spend more money.

I’d actually recommend just getting a bike that has a good frame. You’ll end up breaking all the components anyway, and then you can replace them with your preferred part. The Gary Fisher Tassajara is a good starter bike. Other brands that are very good are Trek and Giant.

For more info, I’d check out the review on http://www.mtbr.com

  2. At the top end they’re all as good as each other.

Personal preferences for style and componentry plays a large part in making a choice between individual bikes.

For extra reliabilty you can play it safe and avoid some ultra lightweight parts.

KHS, Specialized, Trek, and Giant are all great names
I would stay away from Diamondback

  4. Trek, Specialized, Giant, I believe they all carry a lifetime warranty on their frames.

I have had a trek zx7000 mtb for the best part of 10 years and i only just changed the drivetrain on it last year and i only did so to make the bike lighter.Dont know if its just bad luck but i found that my original stx parts lasted for nearly 9 years and the xt parts i have now are showing wear after a year.
Unless your bothered about weight then i would look for a really good frame that suits you and take it from there.
So my personal experience is a trek is reliable

ps my frame will probably snap in half tomoro now
