The guy in the Specialized Concept Store even advised me against buying a Spesh £900 full sus because at that price he said the components weren’t up to much compared to a HT for similar money.
I’d definitely go hardtail at £400 and there are lots of reasonably good 400 quid hardtails around. Also consider V brakes instead of discs as the other equipment on the V braked bike may be of higher quality. Cheaper disc setups aren’t always much of an improvement over V brakes anyway. The cheapest Spesh Rockhopper or the dearest Hardrock are both worth a look. I had the cheapest Hardrock and they’re a nice neutral feeling ride but things bend, break & wear out straight out of the box so not really up to the hammer.
I don’t think it’s wise to buy a full suspension bike for £400 considering that one rear suspension shock costs not much less than £400.
for £400 you can get a truly decent starters hardtail XC bike though.
ponder it.
Add about £600 tand you might that you might be OK.
I would look at a hardtail for that money. All of the manufacturers do a reasonalble machine at this price point. The specialized machine has a nice frame, although it has V brakes. Giant do a nice little number for around £400 with hydraulic discs. You might also consider something like the Claude Butler cape wrath. You might also want to look at last years stock. Rutland had a few sale items recently in MBR. Worth seing what they have got.
But for your price bracket, get a hard tail. Components can be upgraded, so look at the best frame you can get for the money.
Luck
Check out Wiggle.co.uk. They have a good range and often post reviews from cycle mags as well.
Matt and Alex are right on.
I would look for a reasonable good hard tail for that price, it will last forever and do a decent job too. For sure it would be a better bike than the full suspension at the same price of 400.
Dont go there!! Get a hardtail, you get a better bike for the money under about £1200.
lad any mountain bike you get for that price would be a pice of crap..you would be better off raising your budget and getting a better one…
