I ride lots of trails and hills and off-road terrain...and an occasional jump or two.

For just an occasional jump or two if you are young enough (30 or less) then a hardtail anything will suit your needs fine, with front suspension of course. Any full susp. for less than $1200 or so is not worth the money. Of course a f/s XC bike may have the option of locking out both front and rear shocks and that would give you the versatility of doing anything you wanted to do but XC bikes are not meant to be jumping all over the place either, they have limits too. If you are older then F/s may be for you. They are not made for comfort they are designed to keep the wheels in constant contact with the ground and all the irregularities that you encounter along the way.
a hardtail mountain bike will give you more speed and better mobility around tight corners.
if you ride trails and xc with maybe a very few jumps than a hardtail mountain bike is the best choose for you.
if you plan on hitting big jumps and go on long descends downhill than a full suspension is better
but for trails and xc go with a hardtail bike
A hardtail trail bike with reasonable front suspension will do the job for you.
normally a hardtail. but specialized has the fsr ful susp with travel lockout when pedalling.
