Hey guys,

I want to buy a mountain bike. I live in a town which is has a lot of hills. These make it difficult to ride a normal bike when going uphill.

What type of mountain bike should i buy?

And what is the difference in gear speads?

I heard alot of speed 5, speed 18 ...but i dont understand them im a beginner in cycling!

Thanks alot!

5 speed does not exist anymore. 18 would work for you at a minimum: 6 cogs in the rear and 3 in front on the crank….go with a 27 speed as that is what will give you the widest range of gears to negotiate those hills you have…9 in the rear and 3 in front, get it now? When climbing you want to be in a lower gear such as 1 in the front and 1-5 in the rear and when you are going faster then you want to be in the big ring in the front and a smaller ring in the rear. Look for a bike in the $400 and up range and NOT from a dept store (with the exception of those Forge bikes which seem to be ok) You dont get service after the sale at a dept store! Go to a bike specific shop in your area and compare a few and dont worry about what brand you get, they all have one of two component groups on them Sram or Shimano and stick with a hardtail unless you plan on going off road with the bike and then NO full suspension under $900 will be worth a damn!

ok first off get something light like a kona get disc brakes and make it a 24 speed you will love it and for hills get conyinental tires rubber Queen 2.4 in front race king 2.2 in back great setup i love mine and btw the difference is the lower the gear the easier it is to pedal

For entry level—its best you go for a bike with front suspension . The Mongoose Amasa Comp, alsoTyax Elite,GT Avalanche,KHS Alite 1000 are well equipped bikes —-read more at http://www.bikeradar.com,bicycling.com and mbaction.com —
