my bike is rubbish and i have a biking holiday coming up. it would be reall useful if you could help me with this!!. a ladies bike, with pretty good suspension and thick tyres!

As a ladies cyclist for many years, I am totally unconvinced of the difference between ladies and men frames.. might be worth considering a smaller mens frame.
I would also recommend shopping around and trying out a few at your local decent bike shop. Cycling Plus magazine is also worth a read to source such shops and decent deals on bikes.
Chain reaction website as mentioned previously is v. good.
Also, I would recommend trying to buy second hand (your local bike shop or mags may have a sale / wanted board.

I would recommend against a ladies bike (unless you intend to wear a dress whilst riding) and against full suspension (unless you plan on riding VERY rough trails).
Instead, have the bike fitted as a mens (triangle) model (men and women have just as much to lose "down there"). I would heartily recommend a "hybrid" bike (narrow tyres for road and light trails) or "comfort" bike (wide tyres for unpaved but smoother trails) for most comfort and efficiency. Avoid purchasing from discount stores, or from shops that are unable to fit you correctly.
Ultimately, a womens fit on a triangle frame should have you standing over the top tube of the frame with about 3" (75mm) clearance between you and the frame. When sitting on the saddle and a foot on the pedal, your foot should be parallel to the ground and knee should have a very slight bend to it. You should NOT be able to touch the ground with both feet flat-footed while sitting on the saddle!
If you are in Europe, I would recommend looking at Raleigh, Dawes, or Taylor. If you have problems finding these brands, then Trek or Diamondback would be my choice.
You should be able to find a good new bike for about 200.00. if you are lucky, you might find one at a boot sale for less.

have a day out in Cambridge there is a street called Mill Road they are probably on the net as well Mike’s Bikes or Cycle King or the many others there are also upmarket bikes such as Townsend
So here goes start at Townsend at Mitchams corner
then Kings parade then two near the catholic church then on to Mill Road this will also be a tourist walk as well so bring your brownie
