More interested in hardtail bikes as full suspension is too expensive. I was looking at specialized rockhopper pro 2009 which is £850. But is it just the name that is making it expensive or are they really worth it?

I suggest that you go to an Evans Cycles and look at the Pinnacle range. This is indeed a store brand but have some very good engineering and are equipped as well or better than just about any bike for the price.
You can do better with Orange for £625 in Glasgow.
check up cube bikes the frame are awesome should be within your budget
The Specialized is not bad. You are buying a good XC frame that will enjoy single track.
It is worth looking at the Scott Scale, if you are considering race work.
The Orange Evo 8 isnt bad.
If you are thinking of full sus, the Kona Coller 07 version can be picked up for 900.
Cannondale are also worth a look.
Of all of these, I still think that the Specialized is going to give you the best all round ride.
Luck
I read your shipwrecked question, and I just wanted to let you know that my brother in law (Jack) was on it this year, and he went out there August the 23rd and came back early November.
(:
The other people were wrong!
haha.
If I was spending £900 on anything I would want local expert advice, someone I could go back to if I had a problem or just needed a bit of help. Go and see your local "GOOD" bike shop. The owner will be pleased to give you the best advice he/she can. They want you to be happy with your purchase and to get the most out of your cycling. You may make a life long friend into the bargain!
